MYOB

Has anyone seen the SNL sketches about the Target check out lady who is super nosey and talks about herself a lot? The last time Ben Affleck was on SNL, he played a UPS guy in the Target sketch. Remember? Well, that was my most recent Tar-jay experience.

I ran in for "just one thing" and as usual, walked out with two full bags. I really did go to buy only a new Britta pitcher. Of course when they were selling the pink ones, I didn't have any need to buy one. But after years of use, mine finally died and now the pink one is no where to be found. I know I will live with the silver one. Heck, I've lived all these years with a white one. But just knowing that the pink one was once all over the place drives me batty. I bet water tastes best from a pink pitcher. As usual, I am getting sidetracked here.

So I left with the silver (not pink...boo hoo) pitcher and a ton of other crap....er.....important stuff that will complete my life. Including a few packets of seeds for lettuce mix and herbs. So I check out and the check out lady has to comment on every bleepin' thing I have. She was all "I love this" or "I don't like those because ....." or "I've never had these. Are they good? Where did you find them?" and so on. Then came the seeds. I seriously only bought three little seed packets. We're not talking about a farm's worth here. Oh she went on and on about how I was never going to be able to grow them from seeds because she tried it once and they died and I would never be able to do it either and I really should just buy plants (which I should point out that Target does not sell....so essentially she was telling me to take my business elsewhere) and on and on and on.

What do you say to that? Now I am not a rude person. I'm fairly talkative and ask ask how cashiers are doing, make small talk about the weather and such. But I don't need your commentary on every item in my cart. It's annoying and embarrassing and really puts a girl on the spot. It was literally just like that SNL sketch. Horrible and hilarious all at the same time. Mind your own business, Target Lady. Oy vey!

Okay, so I so had to go pull that skit up again to watch! So funny! Only I know you were probably as aggravated ad those customers were in the skit! LOL Thanks for sharing! :)

You're definitely NOT rude. While there is nothing wrong w/ quick small talk...rambling on about everything you're buying is unnecessary.

There was a guy at the Blockbuster around here who did that with every single movie you picked...like he was announcing to the entire store what you were renting and his opinion on it.

PS..I get what you say about going into Target for 1 thing and then spend $100 on a cartload...I do it all the time...

LOL!!! I love that skit...
"Where'd ya get those?!?!?!" It's hilarious! Sorry it happened to you in real life, I bet you just wanted to take all your life-completing necessities and book it back to your car. I must agree, water would most definitely taste better from a pink pitcher. (Did you hear, silver is the new pink?) You could also say that your pitcher is platinum.

I totally loved that skit! I can NEVER get out of target without buying so much useless stuff I don't need... I have been trying to steer clear lately!

Grrr, that would be super annoying. I haven't seen that SNL skit, I'll have to check it out on youtube. I'm usually more talkative than the cashier and feel like a dopey smiler way too happy because the cashier usually seems so tired of ringing up items.
I'm a rambler.
Ramble, ramble.

I had a lady like that at Walmart on Monday night. She felt the need to tell me about how her rent was $600, but they only had $140. Her BF just spent $40 on something, so they were going to have to return a router or something.... I honestly didn't know what to say, so I just kept nodding. The guy behind me kept giving me sympathetic looks. The kicker was she kept talking to me after I paid and had my groceries in my cart and was wheeling it away!

Maybe we just have a "tell me all about it" face???

I haven't seen that sketch, but that sounds irritating. I would just smile and nod.

I hate this (and really all smalltalk). But then in my psych class we had to do a roleplaying thing and I realized for some of these people they are bored out of their minds and just sort of say whatever is on their minds. I try to redirect and shut them up (in a nice way ;)

I truly get annoyed when the cashiers won't verbalize the total of your transaction. So this is the opposite of the problems I have.
Can't they be normal, not too talkative but still polite? I used to train cashiers at Filene's Basement and this was all part of the deal. Say hello, tell the total, give back change, say thank you have a nice day.
No more, no less.
It seems so simple.
