My Thoughts On Bridesmaiding

If ever I was an expert on a topic, it would be bridesmaiding.

Yes, I said bridesmaiding.  I turned it into a verb.  The action of being a bridesmaid.  It's a real thing.  I've done it a solid 47 gazillion times.  Give or take a few.  I've also read and greeted.  I can greet like nobody's business, let me tell you.  I'm like a campy 80's Eastern Airlines stewardess but in a black dress, wearing a corsage, hands full of programs and on solid ground.

I have perfected the fine art of bridesmaiding.  I can bustle a dress that I am seeing for the first time, make children pose for photographers, fluff flower girl bows, hold multiple bouquets and quickly chill bottles of champagne.  I can snap unruly bridesmaids out of the clouds and make them realize they are here to support you, the bride.  I can deliver groom's gifts, hold rings, rearrange bouquets and centerpieces as we are walking down the aisle, separate bickering divorced parents and most importantly, hold up your wedding dress at 10PM when you realize you last used the potty around noon.  I am a damn good bridesmaid!

I was recently asked if I hate being in weddings, given the permanent state of my singleness.  If I was so happy that all of my friends were now married so that I don't have to bother buying the over-priced dress that I will never wear again.  If I was relieved that I didn't have to fly all over the country three times each summer to support someone else's special day.

My answer was quick and honest.  No.

I love being in weddings.  I love going to weddings.  And I especially love bridesmaiding in weddings of those who mean so very much to me.

I have had a few tough personal moments in the months leading up to weddings where I thought that I might not be able to handle being there.  But when it came down to the wedding weekends, I have never once had anything but an amazing time.  I love love seeing my friends so elated.  And am forever honored when an invite comes in the mail.  Or when a phone call asks me to buy the expensive wear one time only bridesmaid dress.

So no, I do not dislike bridesmaiding.  I actually love it.  And will miss that season of life.  Even if it is a bitter reminder that I might have just missed that season of my life...

oh girl, me and you could have a reallly good convo about. I also feel like I'm a professional bridesmaid. and I love what you say about that season of life and both ways you refer to it. All of my friends seem to know exactly where their lives are going and I...do...not :-)
