I live in a city. It's a small city but a city nonetheless. And if you ask most of my family (who all live in the country), they think it's the big bad scary city. Glad they never came to visit me on the Hill in DC! Anyway, my purpose for pointing that out is to mention that many blocks are a mix of residential and business. I live two buildings from a nice Italian restaurant and then there are many homes and then a block away are three pizza shops. Because in NY, you don't order a pie. You walk down the street to "get a slice." And that is where the divide comes in. Some (say, me for example) sit at tables and eat their slice of pizza in the restaurant. Then another culture of folks like to walk around the streets to eat their food. And when they are finished eating, they like to toss the unwanted crust and paper products down on the street and sidewalk. This is not a NY thing either. When I lived in DC, the same cultural group would do that with chicken wings. I know this because I have a dog and her best command is "drop it" in reference to the crap people toss down on the sidewalks. "Come" and "stay" mean not a whole lot to her but "drop it" has a 98% return rate.

So the other day I was walking the pup and in front of me was a mother and a young (four years old maybe?) little boy. He finished his food and she kept saying, just throw it (the paper napkin) it down, just throw it down. On the damn sidewalk!! They had just passed a trash can (not more than 5 feet away) and were coming up on another trash can. But she kept demanding that he just throw it down and he kept asking, "on the sidewalk??"

I know that nothing is more annoying that some stranger butting her head where it doesn't belong but I just had to. So Sadie and I sped up and I said, "hey buddy, there's a trash can right there to throw it in. You don't want to be a litter bug, right?" The mom gave me dagger eyes, but come on! That's just ridiculous!! Sometimes you just have to say something. I said it in a very cheerful voice and I tried not to be rude. Clearly the mother is long gone but it's not too late for the little kid to learn that trash cans are indeed for....wait for it.... trash. Sheesh!

So we all know how it goes. Several years ago I was having a thin few months and bought a few items "knowing" that in a few more months they would fit. Clearly that is the logical response. Instead I gained 40 lbs. And then I bought a few things that either look better on the hanger than on me or just never were worn. So before I put them up on ebay, I'll try asking here to see if any of y'all might actually fit into these items right now. I am more than happy to combine shipping for multiple items. Forgive me for this being so long, feel free to skip this post if it in any way offends you. I'm simply trying to slim down my closet of cute clothes that realistically have not been worn ever or in more than a year. Nautica skirt. New with tag attached and never worn. I'm not even sure why I never wore this last summer. It's really pretty linen/cotton blend and fully lined in another linen/cotton blend. Lilly Pulitzer Colleen Dress Printed with Daiquiri Pink Between The Lines. Brand new with tag attached and purchased recently from RueLaLa. The tag MSP is $278, I paid @$90 before shipping, and it can be yours for $80 + $5 SH. I adore it but just didn't love it on me as much as on the hanger. The fabric is fabulous though and the belt could be worn without the dress as a headband or with jeans. Size 10. SOLD

And then this is a dress a girlfriend bought for her daughter at a consignment shop. But it had a little stain on it. So I jazzed it up with her initial in another Lilly Pulitzer fabric. I thought it turned out pretty cute for something purchased for a few bucks.

Did anyone else watch Oprah today? I don't know why I thought to watch it, but I did and OMG did it ever hit home. Monique's (newly crowned Oscar winner) family, minus Monique, were on Oprah. You know it's going to be shady when the main person refuses to participate. I know very little about Monique and have not seen her in any movies (in my defense, I average at best one movie a year) and have no idea if she actually has a last name. But apparently in an interview pre-Oscars, she told Babs that her brother used to molest her as a child. So said brother was on the big O today. And admitted what he did. For the first time ever. But he was all kinds of smug about it. Making excuses and claiming that apologizing on Oprah (rather than to Monique's face) should be enough to get them back to being "normal brother and sister." Then her other brother was all about saying that Monique should be grateful because molester brother was a good guy other than the years of abuse and they seemed to get along fine. Then the dad jumped in on that game too.

I was sick! Clearly they have other family issues brewing there, but I just could not believe all those people were standing up for the admitted child molester and basically saying Monique should get over it. And then I realized that I can in fact believe that. I've been there. I live in that world all the time. People who actually witnessed some of the abuse that happened to me as a child, act that way towards me too. Once I was in college and officially an adult, something changed in people. All of a sudden these practically family members were telling me I needed to just get over it and accept things for the sake of my mother. Defending her. Condemning me. Acknowledging what went on but saying I needed to just live with it because she is my mother. And don't get me started on what my mother says. I have countless letters saying I needed to apologize to her and her husband (my child abusers) because they took me on nice vacations. Going to a nice place with your abuser is not a nice vacation. It's hell in a foreign country without a way to at least call anyone.

The whole bit about molester brother saying sorry on Oprah being enough to just move past it grossed me out. It's not enough. It might never be enough for her. And he has no right to say what is enough. It took him 30 years and a sister talking about it on an Oscar special to admit what he did. 30 years is a hell of a long time for someone to swallow that pain. I am so blessed to have my dad always loving and supporting me. I cannot imagine having no family members choosing you. And yes, things like this require a choice. It's messy. That's reality though. Those family members chose molester brother over abused Monique. And that alone makes me want to be Monique's best friend. I can relate to much of that. And I understand how people saying "get over it" hurts twice as much as the actual abuse. It's a slap in the face and someone saying you deserved it. It's miserable. Clearly, this show hit home today and I am livid. Mad at my own people and mad at these complete strangers. I will never understand how people justify choosing the abuser over the abused. Never.

And since my weekend sort of blew up in my face and I am truly exhausted (so not a good sign given that it is only Monday), this is the closest thing y'all will get to a post from me today. I almost forgot to mention that my fur baby, Sadie Kate, turned eight paws old yesterday. I can't believe my baby girl has been in my world for so long.  Sadie is the best sleeping guard dog, cuddle bunny and town welcome wagon.  She makes me smile every single day. And in return, I spoil her rotten. It's a system that seems to work well for us!
