I live in a city. With a perfect puppy who needs walks at least three times a day. When it is about to snow, people kindly toss out handfuls of ice melt salt. But unless you are willing to pay twice the price for the pet friendly variety, that stuff is killer to innocent little pups. It burns puppy paws. Sadie starts limping and if it is hurting more than one paw before I can squat down to wipe it clean, she will just lay flat on the ground crying. I've carried her home more than once because I feel so bad for my sweet little girl.
Over the last month or so, I've been on a quest for dog boots. This is big for me. I certainly don't judge you for dressing up your dogs but I would not dream of putting clothes on my pup. The boots though are just so necessary. Yet so difficult to find. I've ordered some online, as has my father, and bought two at local stores. That's four pairs so far. Three of the four didn't fit her even though according to the tag, the next size up is intended for labs (Sadie Kate is a Sheltie and petite for the breed). This pink pair did fit but they are ridiculous. No tread bottom so they are slippery. She could barely stand up- they would send her flying if she tried to walk on ice. Ignore the mess behind her. Isn't she cute, though?!
Have any of you purchased boots for your dog? If so, what brand do you have and where did you find them? We have many more months if salty sidewalks ahead of us, so while I would like them to look cute, more than anything this really is a necessity.

After I heard on a breed list that Alaskan dogs wear polar fleece booties, I made 2 pairs( hehe) for my Bichon Frisee. They worked and are easy to wash. I sewed a bit of elastic at the top of just a simple tube. I also put her in a sweater or dogcoat. It is recommended for small breeds. Since she is so low to the ground, we can avoid all the sand and grit splash on her undercarriage if she wears a coat. Sometimes I just put a polar fleece neckwarmer around her middle.
Good luck with the booties!
Those are ridiculously cute! Love it! What a princess!
If you tried to put anything on my dog's feet - she would probably eat them off! *Laugh*

The face that Sadie Kate is making in that picture is priceless!
Why not use the pink pair that is the right size to make some. Thick wool felt should be sturdy enough and give her some traction, too.
Or why not check out the children's section at your local Wally world. They should have some slipper socks that might fit her.
Our floors get so cold, I keep saying I'm going to get Wila some socks. But I don't think she'd take very well to that. Good luck with the boot search. Sadie is such a cutie!
You know, we have talked about this endlessly, and have yet to buy them. This is not good as Tilly already has allergy issues with her feet. My SIL bought the Petsmart house brand and was happy with them all last winter; hope that helps!
Miss Sadie doesn't want to hear this, but she does look Pretty in Pink.

When we lived in the city Lucy had to wear boots. At first she HATED them, but in the end she would prance all around the dog park showing them off.
I'm against ridiculous clothing and shoes for dogs, only utilitarian stuff for my pups. I think her boots were made by Ruff Wear (her fleece lined water proof coat is the same brand).
I'll have to check in my pet drawer for the exact brand in the morning. They are really good, heavy duty water proof material with a non slip, water proof sole, they slip on the feet and have a velcro strip that wraps around the ankles.
I'm hoping Lily grows into Lucy's so I don't have to buy another set.
And we had to carry poor Lucy home on many a walk before we got the boots. Not fun!!
Oh my gosh--this brings back memories for me! I used to have a sheltie and we tried putting booties on her during one New Hampshire winter. She wouldn't walk in them at first, and then ran around trying to shake them off her feet...well, I'm no help, but I love the cute pic of Sadie, and wish you luck in finding a good solution for her sweet paws.
We like Muttluks http://www.muttluks.com Well I say "we" in that the hubby & I have had success with this brand for our Shih-Tzu. The Shih-Tzu doesn't dig them so much & gives us "why do you hate me so much" look when he has to wear these - but they are easier to put on, stay on, have non-slip gripping soles (so he has traction), they have a good assortment of colors & it's easier to determine the correct size with these & they are easy to clean. Their website is not very user-friendly though, which irked me. I ended up buying one pair directly from them & another pair from some online retailer & found it easier with the retailer (can't recall the name though sorry). We live in the sunny south, but when we take our dog to visit family who live in colder & icy places - these Muttluks are a necessity. Hope this helps!
I have a Sadie too! Yours is precious, and so is your blog!
I live in snowy, cold and salty sidewalk Chicago...every pair of dog boots I have found look like they would fall apart. If you ever find a pair that are made well please post. I am on a mission to find a pair for my little bischon-poo Lucy.
We tried some boots for our's when it snowed in Indiana, but they just stood there and looked at us.
Petsmart had some that had hard soles. I don't know if they still have them or not, though.
I did end up going with a fairly plain white one, but your idea for a brooch is AWESOME!!! Definitely going to use a brooch of some description to jazz up the purse! Thanks so much!
Ok, the boots I have are indeed Ruffwear.

Lucy loved hers, they were great protection from salt and ice buildup between her pads.
I'm emailing you a picture of her in the boots.
I love those boots! I doubt I could even get them on either of my dogs.
Those are so cute! I can't imagine boots on my dog. My dog would probably tear them off and eat them. Haha!
I really need to get these for Dixie... the ones I have found here just dwarf her little paws. I saw some cute, cute ones online though. And Sadie's are precious!!
I tagged you in my blog! :)
I think my Roxie needs some booties! The Ice & salt are not her friends!
No boots for Trixie Lulu, but our neighborhood doesn't get salted.
She was limping one morning when it was snowy. I wonder if a neighbor had salted his/her driveway or something. Now I feel like a bad pet parent.
