I've seen so many of my favorite bloggers boast about the ease and positive results that they have when dying their hair at home. And I've thought for years that I would love to be just like them. A proud home hair colorer.
You see, I have been to a dozen hair salons here in Upstate NY and I just never really liked any of them. So I took Laura's lead and went to her salon. Except it's in Vermont. In the summer I might be able to get there in a little over an hour. In the winter (and remember that it is winter up here for at least 6 months) it can take me an hour and a half. More if it's a really bad snow storm. So it's basically a full day affair just to get my hair done.
In the summer it's an easy justification as I just adore the town of Manchester, VT. There's a great Lilly Pulitzer/Vineyard Vines shop, beautiful outlets, cute museums, scenic drives and really yummy restaurants. I have this whole routine down. I drive in with enough time to get a McDonald's Diet Coke, go get my hair cut and colored, go to Lilly, then pop in my favorite book store/restaurant to get the best curry chicken salad ever.
But in the winter, it's not exactly an easy to justify drive. And just because it's decent on this side of the border in the morning doesn't mean that two hours later it's still going to be decent.
So I thought... I mean, everyone else says it's easy. If they can do it and like it....
I don't know, y'all. Maybe I need to wait a week and then do another treatment to lighten it a bit more? It seems an odd color right now. Less blonde blonde and more orange. OK not like Annie orange. But not soft baby blonde either.
I've not seen anyone other than my dog yet so perhaps I need to get outside opinions on the matter. Sadie just doesn't seem to care at all about my hair coloring experience. I do have a JL meeting tonight so I guess I'll find out then if I look like Annie or not. Right now, jury is still out.
Bottom line is that just because it's easy for one blogger does not mean it's easy and successful for another blogger.
The sun will come out, tomorrow....

Oh c'mon, to fairly judge we need to see it.
What color is your hair naturally? Home dying is easiest for light hair colors, it's also a lot easier to go dark. If you're going more than two shades lighter it's recommended to go to a salon, because it needs to be bleached.
Susan- ha- no photos - too many creepers on here.
Jeanni- my natural color is in the blonde family but it gets darker as i get older. But its sort of a blah blonde naturally. I just like it a little lighter.
I dye my own hair and it turns out well but as a chocolate brown brunette it's hard to go wrong. I've been growing my hair obsessively over the past year and have dyed it so many times ( both salon and my own handy work) that it seems to always be two tone however I have been told I am the only one that can see this.It took me a long time to figure out how long dye needed to be in my hair and how long is just too long. It takes practice but it's sure as hell a lot cheaper once you get the hang of it.
Good morning from Los Angeles!
Honey, I have been where you are. My hair is brown, but I wanted it a bit darker. Um...can a Southern Belle be a Goth as well? Because I looked positively Wednesday Aadams-ish. Maybe I'm wrong, because I'm certainly no expert, but I think there's another step required when lightening your hair. Best wishes on figuring this out! Let us konw how it turns out.
Warmly,
Elizabeth
Yea, I say try adding a lighter/brighter shade on top of what you just did, or at least add highlights? Good luck! (I've done some real doozies to myself over the years :)
I'm always surprised to hear from people who have never dyed their hair at home before. I even had an associate who is around my age come in who missed a large section of hair in the back. Seriously. And it took me so off-guard I couldn't help pointing it out. ("Oh wow! You colored your hair........and you missed a spot." Her hair went up into a ponytail real quick.) Check all angles in the mirror before you leave the house, ask a trusted friend if you got it all, or have them do it for you.
My only experience with at-home haircolor was when I colored my friend's hair purplish red instead of the chocolate brown she was hoping for. I'm scared to try coloring mine but I'm going to need to do something soon.
no no no!! I am sure it is just beautiful. but my only experience is with hydrogen peroxide and a lot of sun-in on the jersey shore. You are brave momma! and honey, if it is that bad you get yourself to the beauty parlor. No more kitchen beautician you hear me??? xo
